This page provides a basic checklist of logistical issues
to consider before applying.
Passport
Check the expiration date on your passport to see if you need to renew
it. Most countries will not issue a visa unless you have at least 6 months
of validity beyond your expected stay. If you do not have a valid passport,
you should apply for one as soon as possible to avoid rush fees and undue
stress. U.S. citizens can find out more information about applying for
or renewing a passport at http://travel.state.gov/passport/index.html.
Tickets
Find out the best place to buy airline tickets. Ask around on campus or
see if there is a student travel store on campus.
Visa
Begin researching the visa requirements for your internship early so that
you know if there will be additional expenses associated with aquiring
a visa (such as fees or travel to a consulate).
Finances
Organize a list of any financial obligations you have at home and decide
if there is someone you trust with power of attorney to handle them for
you.
Academic Credit
The sooner you can make arrangements, the better, especially if you are
close to graduation and need to be sure the credits will apply toward
your degree and fulfill requirements. However, remember that all internship
applications are competitive and your internship is not guaranteed until
you receive a Letter of Appointment from IE3. If
you need to register for credits to ensure you have a Plan B for the upcoming
term, we recommend you do so, however, remember to drop the classes when
you are registered by your office of international programs or you will
be charged twice!
