If you plan to apply for an international internship in the future, now
is the time to start preparing yourself linguistically and culturally.
The
absolute best way to prepare for an internship culturally and linguistically
is to study abroad in the country and deepen your understanding of the
culture and language.
If you have already done that, then keep your insight into current events
and your professional vocabulary up to date by reading newspapers from
your host country on the internet or in your university library.
Meet
students from your host country who are studying here. They can give you
insight into cultural differences they have experienced first hand and
will probably enjoy meeting you and .
If
the internship site you are applying for has a website, read the information
on it to be familiar with the current issues and common vocabulary words.
Talk
to recently returned interns about their recommendations.
Talk
to faculty members who visit the country frequently or have lived there.
Visit
the office of international programs and request a reading list for the
country where you plan to do an internship.
Make
sure your language level is at least that required by the internship site.
Remember that all minimum requirements are exactly that - minimums.
The more work you do to prepare yourself before you leave, the easier
it will be for you to adjust and perform.
Keep
a running notebook of vocabulary words you may need.
Find
a language partner to practice with.
