An internship
abroad is a huge challenge. You will be dealing with two transitions simultaneously:
from school to work and from the culture of the U.S. to that of your host
country.
Your success is highly dependent on two things: your motivation and your
preparation. Hopefully if you have read this far, you are already motivated.
This page will give you ideas for preparing yourself.
Preparation begins well in advance of your internship and involves many
aspects of your life.
Academic and financial planning are two
important components that need to be addressed before applying for an
internship. It is no fun to find out when you are 5,000 miles away that
your financial aid will not come through or that your advisor will not
grant you credit! If you plan to apply for a scholarship,
be sure to check deadlines well in advance.
Selecting an internship that is a good match
for you and preparing yourself as much as possible (logistically,
linguistically and culturally)
are the other important cornerstones for a good experience.
If you have any questions, talk them over with your campus
coordinator or contact the regional director for the internship you
are considering. Other valuable people to include in your planning are
your academic advisor, career center and financial aid office.
