Program Overview

IE3 Global Internships (formerly Global Graduates - The Oregon International Internship Program) was created by the Oregon University System to provide university students in the Pacific Northwest with an improved understanding of global issues and equip them with professional experience and international competence. Since the beginning of the program in 1995, over 1200 interns have been placed in at least 82 countries worldwide.

Students earn academic credit on their home campuses while abroad on their internship. IE3 Global Internships arranges placement and provides pre-departure orientation, international health insurance, learning tools, monitoring and support. A program fee is charged in lieu of tuition. The program fee includes academic credit (up to 12 quarter credit hours the first term). Most forms of financial aid can be applied toward the costs of an internship.

Internship Standards
Internships range from ten weeks to six months or more of full-time work. The internship integrates academic credit on your home campus with on-the-job experience, allowing you to gain valuable skills while working toward your degree. Each internship is an individual work experience. In some cases you may be the only intern in the region. IE3 works with host organizations to ensure supervision and logistical support in the host country. As an intern, you will be treated as a contributing member of the team and are expected to be professional, mature, adaptable, and self-motivated.

Internship Openings
Internships are available in a variety of private-sector companies, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions around the world. When applying for an internship, check carefully that it aligns with your professional goals and interests. Involve your career advisor in the decision making process.

Language Requirements

Most, but not all internships require foreign language proficiency. Check the position descriptions for specific language requirements. English language internships are available in countries ranging from Ireland to Namibia and from Singapore to Australia.

Eligibility
You are eligible for an international internship if you are:
A junior, senior, post-bac, graduate, or LCC student.
Currently enrolled in a degree program at a participating university.
In good academic standing.

Placement Process
Internship placements are competitive. The regional director will consider your application materials and the interview report from your home campus before recommending you as a candidate to the host organization. Host organizations make the final decision on all candidates.

Once the host organization confirms your placement, the regional director will send you an official letter of appointment, a budget and orientation information. It is your responsibility to arrange for the necessary visas, vaccinations, and travel documents.

Academic Credit
You must be enrolled as a student for the duration of your internship. You arrange for appropriate credit with faculty at your home institution. The amount and type of credit you receive will depend on your internship goals, your academic major, and your graduation requirements. A general guideline for internship credit is one academic quarter credit hour for every 30 hours of work. Talk to an advisor in the office of international education if you have questions about international internship credit on your campus.

Pre-Departure Orientation
Pre-departure orientation will help prepare you for living and working abroad. Orientation covers internship and employer expectations, health and safety issues, cultural differences and logistics. Orientation may also include reports and briefings by past participants.
