Wogen Children and Mothers Support Association works towards the health, education and productivity of mothers, orphans and vulnerable children of Gondar, Ethiopia. Its programs focus on education and development for children, safe water and sanitation, and economic and educational empowerment of women. Interns contribute in the areas of social work, micro-enterprise development, environmental assessment and conservation, urban gardening, and children's development.

About the Organization

Wogen Children and Mothers Support Association is an indigenous non-governmental that works towards the health, education and productivity of mothers, orphans and vulnerable children of Gondar, Ethiopia. It does this through programs focused on education and development for children, safe water and sanitation, and economic and educational empowerment of women. Some recent programs include school sponsorship, urban gardening, environmental impact analysis, well-building, job skills training, children’s performance group, and income generation and microenterprise activities.

This internship is offered in collaboration with the Corvallis-Gondar Sister Cities Association (C-GSCA). Job Description

There are several positions available depending on the applicants’ interests and skills.

Social Work Intern

  • Conduct beneficiary need identification in collaboration with the respective stakeholders in a participatory way
  • Conduct target group/beneficiary selection based on Wogen's target groups selection criteria
  • Under-take project baseline surveys with the participation of the target communities and other relevant stakeholders
  • Organize, document and manage relevant project data of the target groups (project beneficiary children and community)
  • Facilitate community awareness raising workshops/trainings on harmful traditional practices, HIV/AIDS, family planning/reproductive health, gender, etc.
  • Provide technical assistance and facilitate trainings with business management skills for families involved in Income Generation Activities
  • Correspond with sponsors of children (report and letter writing)
  • Assist in the preparation of Project Annual Operational Plans and in project monitoring & evaluation activities
  • Prepare periodical reports of activities and submit to the Project coordinator for compilation.
  • Conduct case studies and document them

Micro Enterprise Development (MED) Intern

  • Carry-out need assessments of beneficiary families to be involved or have been involved in Income Generation Activities (IGAs) or Micro-Enterprise Development (MED) activities
  • Identify or assist the community in identifying sustainable and marketable IGAs (market assessments) for beneficiary families
  • Facilitate and coordinate trainings and workshops for beneficiaries on business and financial management and market assessment skills
  • Follow-up on IGA activities of beneficiaries (carry-out visits at home and business areas for monitoring and evaluation)
  • Prepare periodical reports of his/her activities and submit to the Program Coordinator for compilation
  • Assist in project planning activities related to beneficiaries’ IGAs
  • Conduct case studies and produce report journals & magazines for donors

Environmentalist Intern

  • Carry out the environmental impact analysis of USAID urban garden program activities in the different Wogen garden sites
  • Follow-up and conduct supportive supervision on garden activities of beneficiaries
  • Assist with the development of an environmental impact analysis check list manual for agricultural experts & gardeners
  • Assist in the design and implementation of environmental impact mitigation plans
  • Carry-out visits at garden sites for monitoring and evaluation
  • Facilitate and coordinate trainings and workshops for agricultural experts and gardeners on environmental conservation & problem mitigation
  • Organize, document and manage relevant project data of the target groups (project beneficiary children and community)

Children’s Circus Intern
The circus club has the combined purposes of providing education and activity for youth, and educational social messages for the community.

  • Provide training for circus members
  • Coordinate and participate in different circus show events such as New Year festivals, carnivals, exhibitions, holiday celebrations and competitions.
  • Organize edutainment, entertainment and social/educational events in public venues such as schools and universities focusing on local and international event days like World HIV/AIDS day.
  • May facilitate experience-sharing visits to other similar circus clubs found in other areas to share best practices, and build networks and friendships. Similarly, the club may host other clubs coming from other areas for similar experience sharing.
  • Organize, document and manage relevant project data of the target groups (project beneficiary children and community)
  • Provide counseling and guidance services for circus members
  • Identify, target and approach potential donors to solicit funds

Academic Background

A wide variety of academic backgrounds are sought, including youth development and physical education, drama, business, social work, social services, environmental sciences, botany, non-profit management, information technology.

Skills/Experience

Skills and experience requirements vary by position. Interns must be willing to work with Wogen staff and share their experience.

Language Ability

None, but Amharic is beneficial for working directly with the community members.

IE3 Program Fee

The IE3 program fee is $3450 for the first term for both in-state and out-of-state students and $1000 for each additional term, regardless of credit earned.
