Intern for the United Nations in Ecuador. UNIFEM is a learning and advocacy organization fostering networks and linkages that contribute to women's empowerment, policy reform, and gender sensitive development. 12 month internship. Great opportunity for senior or Master's students.
About the Organization
UNIFEM is a learning and advocacy organization fostering networks and linkages that contribute to women's empowerment, policy reform, and gender sensitive development. UNIFEM provides technical support to governments and promotes dialogue between governments and women's organizations.
The UNIFEM Andean Regional Office supports programs in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia, largely through small grants, training, conferences and publications. A priority focus is on Women's Economic and Social Rights, but also Governance and Women's Leadership and on Ending Violence Against Women and Women's Human Rights. The Office funds and monitors numerous projects related to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights, and others.
Job Description
Assisting staff in achieving UNIFEM's goals including: making field visits to, and evaluation of, UNIFEM sponsored projects; assisting with proposal preparation and review; overseeing projects and activities with co-workers; supporting regional seminars and conferences; preparing and delivering workshops on the subject of women's human rights, translating project documents; assisting editor in the publication of the regional magazine, researching background data for articles and speeches, filing, faxing and other office duties as assigned.
Intern Learning Outcomes include: In-depth knowledge of Andean women's issues, organizations and agendas; ability to appraise and prepare UNIFEM projects; preparation of monitoring, assessment and other reports.

Academic Background
Master's degree student in Women Studies, International Development, International Relations, Political Science, or related Social Sciences (e.g. Anthropology, Sociology).
Skills/Experience
A strong interest in and experience with international gender issues. Fundamental understanding of current gender-related concepts, frameworks, and programs. Experience living in a Spanish-speaking country.
Language Ability
Intermediate-advanced Spanish skills.
Other Requirements
Computer literacy using MS Word, MS Excel and Windows.

IE3 Program Fee
For spring term 2012, the program fee for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. The expected program fee beginning summer term 2012 is $3450 for the first term. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

Additional Expense Information
Approximately $500-$650 per month for rent, food, incidentals and recreation. Interns pay anywhere between $80-$225 per month for a shared apartment and about $200 for a single apartment. There are postings in the UN cafeteria to live with other UN employees and there are plentiful options for housing in Quito. Plan to arrive a week in advance to look for housing and get settled.
Students must apply for a Volunteer Visa through the Ecuadorian Consulate prior to departure for Ecuador. Currently, the costs associated with the visa application are $180.
