Interns assist the Curator and board members of this small museum on the island of Tobago in grant writing, organizing materials and events, and working with preservation. The mission of the Tobago Museum is to collect and develop West Indian historical, cultural and educational materials in an effort to preserve and enhance the West Indian history and culture. About the Organization

The mission of the Tobago Museum is to collect and develop West Indian historical, cultural and educational materials in an effort to preserve and enhance the West Indian history and culture and to educate the public about the West Indian people.

The museum updates the archeological index and artifacts, documents oral and ethnographic data, manages and administers the museum. In addition, it is involved in lab conservation and preservation, exhibition, community development and public relations.

Job Description

The intern will assist the Curator and board members in grant writing, in researching funding opportunities, in organizing Tobago Museum materials and events, and working with lab conservation and preservation. In addition, the intern will assist the Curator in artifact collection and documentation, researching local funding options, developing promotional materials, and networking within the community. Interns are also encouraged to seek individual projects, or a research activity, in and around their primary assignment. To the extent possible, the Curator will guide them to contacts and information sources. Such activities, and any time away from the Museum, needs to be programmed with, and sanctioned by, the Curator.

Skills/Experience

Knowledge of Caribbean history and culture useful; archeological or ethnographic experience and/or museum design experience helpful.

IE3 Program Fee

The program fee* for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

Additional Expense Information

Interns should budget approximately $1500 per month for room, board, incidentals, and recreation. Museum staff will assist with arranging housing in a guest cottage (cost not including meals) and airport pick-up, etc as scheduling permits.

Trinidad & Tobago is well known for its food, beaches, marine life, and Carnival celebrations. The Steel Pan is the only musical instrument developed in the 21st century, and this was developed in Trinidad and Tobago. Hence, the reason for being called, not only the land of the Humming Bird, Limbo and Calypso, but also the land of the Steelband.
