About the Organization
Tokyo English Life Line (TELL) is a nonprofit mental health services organization that has been serving the international community since 1973. The Life Line’s highly trained volunteer counselors provide free, anonymous and confidential telephone counseling and general resource information 365 days a year. Face-to-face counseling by professional, qualified psychotherapists is available for individuals, families and groups on a variety of topics.
TELL is an accredited non-profit organization that provides confidential support and western-style counseling to the international and Japanese community. TELL provides three core services: the Life Line, TELL Counseling, and TELL Children and Families. The TELL Counseling Office Intern provides support primarily to TELL Counseling, TELL Children and Families, and various outreach programs associated with these programs.
TELL Counseling Center is the only professional counseling center in Japan staffed by licensed internationally trained professionals and accredited by the Samaritan Institute. TELL Counseling offers multi-lingual, confidential, face-to-face counseling, employee assistance programs, psychiatric evaluation and medication, professional workshops, and flexible fees depending on ability to pay.
TELL Children and Families provides a team-based approach by internationally trained licensed specialists and offers confidential assessments, counseling, and psychological testing that is multi-cultural and multi-lingual. Fees are flexible. TELL Children and Families Outreach programs include; Child Protection Services, Exceptional Parenting lecture series, School Life Line Awareness Program, Teen Suicide Awareness Program, and professional workshops for youth, parents, and educators.
TELL’s services are supported by both financial and non-financial contributions from individuals, service organizations, community groups and corporations. TELL also holds a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, including the Charity Walk/Runathon in the spring and the Connoisseurs’ Auction in the fall.

Job Description
TELL has needs three distinct intern positions available to qualified applicants:
NPO Events Planning and Public Relations Intern
The intern should play a major role in supporting and organizing TELL's biggest fundraising events, the TELL Charity Walk & Runathon in May and the Annual TELL Connoisseurs’ Auction, which takes place in November. Typically, the events are organized by a group of English-speaking volunteers who form a committee and sub committees and contribute significant time and resources to making the events more attractive and exciting each year. The intern will need to liaise and work closely with TELL staff and the committee, coordinate and provide administrative support before and after the event, and represent the business office during planning and execution. Additional responsibilities may include:
• Grant writing
• Develop Community Resource Book
• Business office administration and fund raising activities
• Promotion of Life Line special projects, such as suicide awareness programs
• The maintenance and development of TELL website
• Promotion of community outreach programs such as school awareness visits
• Participate in staff meetings
• Attend meetings with potential corporate donors with board members and TELL directors
• Assist in the organization and planning of fundraising events
• Donation management
• Liase with TELL partners and sponsors

TELL Counseling Office Intern
A wide range of opportunities exit depending on the intern’s abilities and the TELL project cycle:
• Assist with intake of clients seeking therapy
• Receptionist for counseling office
• Observe clinical staff meetings and case discussions
• Grant writing experience for our Outreach Programs
• Develop and Update the Community Resource Book
• The maintenance and development of TELL website
• Plan and participate in community outreach programs such as school awareness visits
• Help develop new workshop programs for international schools and parenting groups
• Children and Families services special projects
• During the autumn and spring sessions, attend Life Line phone counselor training sessions which includes almost 70 hours of training over a 3 month period (February to April mornings or September to November evenings only). Not all activities are available during the summer term**
Life Line Counseling Intern
A wide range of opportunities exit depending on the intern’s abilities and the TELL project cycle:
• Life Line Telephone Counselor Training
• Participate in telephone counselor interviews and selection process
• Learn the principals of client centered counseling
• Assist with the coordination of the telephone counselor training program
• Attend the trainer the trainer session
• Helped with the printing and coordination of the training manual and trainee workbooks
• Assist with the facilitation of the small groups as a team leader, supporting and guiding trainee counselors throughout the training program
• Evaluate trainee role-plays and participate in the mid term evaluations
• Participated in post training evaluation sessions
• Co-present one presentation in the training program
• Undertake 2 observation shifts on the Life Line
• Attend two group supervisory meetings lead by experienced telephone counselors
• During the autumn and spring sessions, attend Life Line phone counselor training sessions which includes almost 70 hours of training over a 3 month period (February to April mornings or September to November evenings only). Not all activities are available during the summer term**

1 Student per Period; Maximum 3 students per year
Start Dates
Winter, Spring, or Fall for all internships. Summer internship with the Life Line is not possible, but the other 2 options are.
Duration of Internship
12 weeks to 6 months
Academic Background
Depending on the internship job description, the following educational background and experience is preferred: Event Planning, Public Relations, International Studies, Japanese language, Psychology, Social Work or related fields.
Skills/Experience
Preferred:
• Good computer skills - Word, Excel, Outlook, Access; familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop desirable
• English fluency required, Japanese language a plus
• Detail-oriented
• Experience running events or public relations beneficial
• Experience and/or strong interest in community issues, intercultural communication, and research.
• Mature, able to work independently
• Interest in fundraising events
• Interest in Japanese community development
• Experience working or volunteering in the field of mental health services is useful.
Language Ability
English fluency OR Japanese fluency with conversational English. Some conversational Japanese is a plus for native English speakers.
Other Requirements
Interns will be asked to join events that often take place on weekends.
Interns may join events and training sessions to improve both their Japanese language ability and understanding of cultural and mental health issues in Japan.

IE3 Program Fee
The IE3 program fee is $3450 for the first term for both in-state and out-of-state students and $1000 for each additional term, regardless of credit earned. You do not pay tuition for the term(s) you are abroad. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

*this one time additional fee is to offset the additional costs of arranging the internship, and providing orientation support in Japan, The Regional Director for IE3 will discuss these fees with you before beginning the placement process so you can estimate the costs.

NPO Events Planning and Public Relations Intern (additional information):
Interns will be supervised by staff and chair of the committee working on events and outreach.
TELL has 2 –4 major events throughout the year and interns would help with the planning, coordinate and executive of such events. Typically, TELL’s events are organized by a group of English-speaking volunteers who form a committee and contribute significant time and resources to making the event more attractive and exciting each year.
Fall - Wine auction
We would like the intern to play a major role in supporting and organizing our biggest fundraising event, the annual Connoisseurs’ Auction, which takes place in November.
Spring - Art Auction
The Spring Art Auction will feature a one-month art exhibit followed by a formal funding raising event in the form of an art auction. Interns would be asked to help during all phases from planning, to inventory, to donor contact.
Early May - Annual Walk/Run-a-thon
Every year in spring TELL holds a fundraising event joined by over 700 people who either walk or run the 5 km or 10 km circuit around the perimeter of the Imperial Palace.
Because business office resources (particularly staff time) are limited, we see the intern serving as a point person in the office for the events committee, as well as for public relations activities related to events. The interns will need to work closely with the staff and committee, to coordinate and provide administrative support before and after events, and to represent the business office during planning and execution.
Office assistance throughout the year is necessary as well as outreach support for the development of new members and donors.
Tasks may include:
Organizing donation solicitation letters for corporations, organizations, individuals, embassies, etc.
Following up with potential donations and members.
Updating the member and donor/donation database
Updating the ticket-sales database
Updating and overseeing inventory management
Assisting with finalizing event program
Providing support on the day of events
Assisting with arrangements for delivery items
Organizing thank-you letters to donors.
Creating materials for advertising, publicity and outreach.
Assisting with PR and outreach to the general public.
