Interns will join events that take place on weekends. Interns should be prepared to deal with sensitive women’s issues. Interns will learn about the different ways of dealing with the issue of breast cancer given different cultural contexts since the committees are made up of people from diverse backgrounds.

About the Organization

The Run for the Cure Foundation is an organization that funds education and awareness programs throughout Japan. The Foundation is aided by the support of major corporations and organizations that are willing to donate their time, money, goods and energy to fulfill our mission.

Our mission is to increase awareness of the importance of a positive breast health regimen, to strengthen support groups for women in Japan who suffer from breast cancer, and to raise funds to support and encourage the advancement of breast cancer research.

Job Description

Interns will be supervised by staff and chair of the relevant committees.

We have 2 major events in the fall during breast cancer awareness month. Interns would help with the planning, coordination and execution of such events. Typically, events are organized by a group of English and Japanese speaking staff and volunteers.

Summer and Fall interns will be assigned to one of these projects:

  1. Run for the Cure/Walk for Life
    Event joined by over 800 people whom either walk or run the 5 km circuit around the Imperial Palace. We would like the intern to play a major role in doing PR, outreach, and database management.
  2. Pink Ball
    Interns will be asked to help with two committees involved in preparation: entertainment, sponsor solicitation, and ticket sales. Interns will help with record keeping, inventory, and donor relations.

Spring and Summer interns will also be asked to assist with funding committee work.

The interns will need to work closely with the staff and volunteers to coordinate and provide administrative support before and after events, and represent the organization during planning and execution.

Tasks may include:

  • Organizing donation solicitation letters for corporations, organizations, individuals, embassies, etc. Updating the member and donor/donation database
  • Updating the ticket-sales database
  • Providing support on event days
  • Organizing thank-you letters to donors
  • Creating materials for advertising, publicity and outreach
  • Assisting with PR and outreach

Main activities:

  1. Run for the Cure/Walk for Life
    5K Walk and Run to raise funds for and awareness about breast cancer
  2. Pink Ball
    A fund-raising event organized by the Run for the Cure Foundation, dedicated to advancing breast cancer research, education and awareness. It is the Foundation's goal for at least 75% of ticket sales and auction proceeds to go directly toward achieving their mission.

Qualifications

Academic Background

International Studies, Japanese language and history, sociology, Asia studies Intercultural/multicultural studies women’s health, science, public health

Skills/Experience

  • General computer skills - Word, Excel, Outlook, Access
  • Excellent English or Japanese writing skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Experience running events or PR
  • Experience, skill and/or strong interest in community issues, intercultural communication and research
  • Mature, able to work independently

Interest in event coordination, public or women’s health, patient empowerment, community development or policy development is a plus.

Language Ability

English fluency with conversational Japanese OR Japanese fluency with conversational English

IE3 Program Fee

For spring term 2012, the program fee for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. The expected program fee beginning summer term 2012 is $3450 for the first term. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

Compensation

Run For The Cure will cover commuting transportation costs for interns. This stipend is roughly equivalent to $30 per week or $120 per month.

Additional Expense Information

  • This is a one time placement fee to offset the additional costs of arranging the internship (through a partner in Japan) and providing orientation support in Japan, The regional director for IE3 will discuss these fees with you before beginning the placement process so you can estimate the costs.
