About the Organization

With over ten year’s involvement in addressing Maternal and Child Health, Young People’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (YSRHR) and HIV& AIDS, MAMTA has been at the frontier of innovations in responding to these issues in India. As an expanding source of expertise on culturally acceptable sexual health and HIV programming in India, MAMTA undertakes to work with government and non government partners in the South and South East Asia region. MAMTA works with the government on a number of levels, including training, partnership for direct interventions, advocacy, policy research and networking. Through these activities, MAMTA brings considerable knowledge of capacity and coordination issues and policy environment to identify constraints and opportunities for improved sexual reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programming.

MAMTA currently has direct interventions in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and implements projects in at least 12 other states and about 100 districts of India through partner organizations. Nationally, MAMTA coordinates the single largest network (SRIJAN-Sexual Reproductive Health Initiative for Joint Action Network) of NGOs (135 NGO’s from across 90 districts) on YSRHR. From the year 2009, MAMTA is initiating new projects in two South Asian countries-Nepal and Bangladesh.

Capacity building and training is a key dimension for realizing MAMTA’s aims. MAMTA offers International Training Programme on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for 10 South and South East Asian countries. This course is jointly conducted by MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child and RFSU (an NGO based in Sweden with decades of experience working with young people) and sponsored by Sida. The course commenced in 2003 and since then held as a yearly event till 2007.MAMTA is now offering 4 weeks Training Programme on Youth Friendly Health Services to medical professionals working in the public health system. This programme is jointly organized by MAMTA and Lund University, Malmo, Sweden. The first programme was held in 2008 and will be followed by second one in 2009.

The Hindi word "MAMTA" literally means a mother's affection for her child, and the name reflects the spirit or essence of the organization. It was founded with a pediatrician's visit to a slum, where he witnessed the appalling health conditions of the children and their mothers. MAMTA- Health Institute for Mother and Child initiated its work in a slum in Delhi with the objective of improving the health of women and children.

Job Description

Interns may participate in different capacities in a wide variety of projects in any one of the three major divisions: Maternal and Child Health; Sexual Reproductive Health; and Rights and HIV Prevention Care and Support Divisions. This includes participation in field based activities as well as intervention research being carried out as part of different projects. In addition, interns can support the project teams in data analysis, developing monitoring formats, preparing background documents and also working on short term assignments as taken on by the organization from time to time.

Qualifications

Academic Background

Master's or undergraduate students in health, pre-med, nutrition, PPPM or related fields.

Skills/Experience

Interns must have some basic understanding of Indian society and culture. They should have completed some coursework that relates to Indian society and culture. Students should also have basic knowledge of methods used in field research, such as rapport establishment and data collection techniques.

Language Ability

English. Working knowledge of Hindi is desirable but not required.

Other Requirements

Cultural sensitivity and competency with respect to Indian society and culture.

IE₃ Program Fee

The program fee* for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE₃ page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

*The program fee noted above reflects the anticipated fee increase that will go into effect for the Fall 2010 term and will apply to all terms thereafter.
