Budget internship (room and board provided) assisting English teachers at a private bi-lingual school in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Pre-school, elementary, middle, and high school levels. Special Education class available for interested interns. Second year Spanish required to facilitate daily living.

About the Organization

Private bilingual pre-school through high school. Special Education program for Downs Syndrome children. The primary/middle school has 400 students with average class size of 20-25 students. Primary and middle school are well furnished with books, bulletin boards, and educational materials including a computer classroom with 20 computers. The pre-school (150 students) and the high school (100 students) are a short distance from the primary/middle school. The school also offers music class and physical education.

The school is situated at the outskirts of the lovely tourist town of Puerto Vallarta and is located in a quiet neighborhood at the foot of a mountain range. The climate is hot and humid.

Job Description

In addition to teaching English, interns may also assist teachers with special projects and activities in art, music, one-on-one tutoring, and substitute in various grades as needed. Qualified interns may work with Downs Syndrome children. The school director will determine specific duties and assignments appropriate to intern's training, interests and school needs. Interns are regarded as professional staff and are expected to maintain the daily work schedule, do necessary classroom preparation and participate in school tasks and events. At the pre-school, English is taught through activities and through books that the children make. Interns at the pre-school will be provided a uniform. Materials for developing lesson plans are available. High school students receive preparation to pass TOEFL exams.

Qualifications

Academic Background

All undergraduate/graduate majors with preference given to education majors. ESL training and/or experience helpful.

Skills/Experience

Native English speaker. Interns must have training or experience working with groups of children within or outside a classroom setting. Requires skills/ability to deal with classroom management. ESL/EFL training helpful.

Language Ability

Completion of 2nd year university level Spanish (to facilitate daily living).

IE3 Program Fee

The program fee* for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

*The program fee noted above reflects the anticipated fee increase that will go into effect for the Fall 2010 term and will apply to all terms thereafter.

Additional Expense Information

The Teaching Internships in Mexico receive priority consideration for the IE3 Scholarship.

Room and board is provided free of charge by the school in a homestay family who is connected with the school. Students should budget approximately $600 for expenses for a 12 week period. Students who go out frequently or plan to travel on weekends, should budget additional funds.
