About the Organization

Founded in 1992 by Dr. Evaleen Jones, Child Family Health International offers educational, medical recovery, and community health programs at 17 sites in 6 countries. To date their educational programs have 4,500+ alumni from 35 countries. Many participants in the programs are medical students who spend 4 weeks on rotations. The joint program with IE₃ allows for 10 weeks of rotations for pre-med, pre-nursing, and public health students.

Job Description

All rotations are primarily observational and opportunities to learn about the context of healthcare in the country where the program is based. For ten week programs in the same location, the first four weeks will be spent as part of a group of pre-med and medical students learning about the healthcare system by visiting a variety of health care locations. The last 6 weeks will be spent individually in 1-3 different health care locations, allowing students to gain a deeper perspective of the situation in each location. The sites for the final six weeks will be selected in consultation with the local coordinator. Combination programs within the same country are also possible, allowing you to gain insight into different locations and situations.

Academic Background

Pre-med, pre-nursing, public health.

Skills/Experience

Flexibility is key. Interns must be prepared to adapt to a wide variety of living and learning situations.

Language Ability

English, some positions require basic Spanish.

Other Requirements

Cultural sensitivity and competency with respect to Indian society and culture. Due to CFHI's policies, applicants must be over 21 at the time of their internship. Students who will be close to that age at the time of their internship are encouraged to discuss their interest with their campus advisor and IE₃ regional Director.

IE₃ Program Fee

The program fee* for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE₃ page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

*The program fee noted above reflects the anticipated fee increase that will go into effect for the Fall 2010 term and will apply to all terms thereafter.

• The host site fee from CFHI includes:
  • Room and board for 10 weeks
  • Airport pick-up In-country orientation
  • Weekly meetings with Medical Director and Local Coordinator
  • Clinical rotations
  • Use of a mobile phone
