Ngaari Laaw uses performing arts to raise awareness in rural Senegal about important social issues including HIV/AIDS and women's rights. The organization also acts as a music producer and agent and organizes song contests. Interns will be involved in event management and production, fund raising and monitoring, evaluation and development of the women's programs.

About the Organization

Ngaari Laaw is a cultural organization for sustainable development founded in 1989. The organization is recognized as a cultural enterprise and is a member of the United Cultures for Development network (http://www.unitedculturesfordevelopment.nl). The main activities of the organization are based in the rural areas of Senegal. The core programs include a musical tour that aims to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, a water festival and a multi actors program that aims to achieve basic needs for women in Fouta. Ngaari Laaw is also a musical producer and agent and organizes song contests. Ngaari Law employs eight people part time and full time and has a head office in a suburb of Dakar.

Job Description

The intern will mainly work with the production manager and director of program monitoring and evaluation. They will be involved in needs assessment for the women's organizations, setting up training programs, monitoring and evaluating the programs, and assisting with fund raising and lobbying activities. The intern will be also asked to assist in developing new projects, organizing song contests and musical tours (national and international) and festivals, designing fliers, arranging contracts with the artists, and working with the villages committees to host programs.

Academic Background

Ideal candidates will be students of communication/journalism, education, computer sciences, business, social work, music, arts management, gender studies

Skills/Experience

Successful applicants will be flexible, creative, outgoing and able to work with a variety of people.

Experience with performing arts and/or social education through the arts is a desired skill.

Language Ability

French through 300-level is required.

Basic Fulaani would be helpful but can be learned locally as well.

50% of Ngaari Laaw proposals are written in English.

IE3 Program Fee

The IE3 program fee is $3450 for the first term for both in-state and out-of-state students and $1000 for each additional term, regardless of credit earned.
