Intern at one of several English language news agencies in Santiago, Chile. Internships are available in sales and marketing, print journalism, radio broadcasting, web site and graphic design, and photojournalism. Open to most majors. Journalism experience not required. 6 months or longer. Excellent written English skills a must.

Customized internships offered at such organizations as Santiago Times, Valparaíso Times, Patagonia Times, and Santiago Radio- all of them in English. In general, news are taken from the national and local newspapers or internet sites and transformed and adapted for the English-speaking user.
Job Description
Internships are available in a broad range of categories including Sales and Marketing, Journalism (at an Internet newspaper) writing one´s own articles, radio broadcasting interviewing or running a program, and web site and graphic design. Photo journalism interns are also welcome.
The newspapers and the radio station sites rely greatly on interns, who provide essential assistance to a base staff of a few salaried writers.
Interns work a minimum of 40 hours a week. The working week is Sunday to Thursday for The Santiago Times. The work week for Santiago Radio and for the other two newspapers - The Patagonia Times and The Valparaiso Times - is Monday through Friday. The work day at The Santiago Times begins at 12 noon sharp, each day, with a daily news review (pauta) and in- depth discussion of news events in Chile. Workplace and computers are provided by the institution.

Academic Background
Although some journalism or writing experience is preferred, internships are not limited to journalism students. History, Political Science, English, Communications and other areas of concentration also serve as a proper base. There are also opportunities for Photojournalism, Radio Broadcasting, Internet Communications, Graphic Design, Sales, and Marketing.
Skills/Experience
What is most important are solid writing skills and a desire to improve them. And a passion for Chile. Each applicant will need to provide writing samples. Good computer skills.
Language Ability
Intermediate-advanced Spanish skills. Journalism interns should have advanced English writing skills.

IE3 Program Fee
For spring term 2012, the program fee for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. The expected program fee beginning summer term 2012 is $3450 for the first term. Additional Expense Information
Interns will receive assistance in locating suitable, safe and convenient housing. There are options to live with a homestay family, rent a room in a home or apartment or to rent a furnished apartment. Generally, rents run from about $350-$550 per month depending on the option, locale, etc. There is a one-time fee charged by a local agency to arrange housing and to assist with any issues that arise during your stay. The cost is $98 for interns staying for one term and $140 for two terms.
Interns should budget $550-$650 per month for rent, food and living expenses. Students planning to travel extensively on weekends or go out frequently should budget additional funds.
The Chilean Government charges a one-time $100 reciprocity tax upon entry into Chile.
Located in the capital city of Santiago. There are about 5 million people living in the greater Santiago area. It is a modern, urban environment with ease of transportation via the metro and buses. There are many activities in the area from museums and nightlife to shopping and extreme sports. It is also very easy to travel throughout Chile and South America using inexpensive weekend offers through premier airlines such as LAN, Sky and Aircomet.
