The Fulbright Commission serves to provide information about US educational opportunities to students and scholars in the heart of London. Interns work on a wide variety of tasks related to educational advising in the center of London. Tasks include presenting information about the US educational system to British students, working on the center's publications, research, website production (if students have the skills) and other projects as needed. Summer and Fall internships may include some travel to study fairs around Britain. Interns who commit to 6 months receive a stipend. Language requirement: English.

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Publication and/or website design skills are a plus.

About the Organization

The Fulbright Commission promotes educational exchange between the US and UK to foster a mutual understanding of one anothers' countries. The Commission's US Educational Advisory Service (EAS) provides information and advice for anyone in the UK who wishes to study in the US or who needs information on the US education system.

The EAS centre in London is comprised of a resource center and reference library, with three permanent staff members. Answering inquiries about studying in the US in-person, or by email, telephone, mail, and via its website, the Service handled over 200,000 inquiries last year. In addition, the Service organizes events, produces publications and information sheets, sells books on US education, produces newsletters and does outreach work with educational institutions and careers advisers. EAS welcomes interns to assist in its day-to-day services to the public and in its administration of events and other projects.

Job Description

Interns serve as educational advising staff for British and other international students who are planning to study in the United States. Interns answer general inquiries about US education via post, email, telephone, and walk-in advising.These typically revolve around finding programs, registering for admission exams and researching funding. Interns also assist visitors using the reference library. There will also be opportunities to develop projects depending on the activities of the Service at the time. Projects might include: planning and promoting events, researching publications and information sheets on various aspects of US education, and producing articles for the EAS newsletter. Interns usually can attend an advising or recruitment fair during their period at EAS, which may include the opportunity for travel to other parts of the United Kingdom. In addition, the Service has a popular website, which is always expanding and developing. Applications are invited from individuals who are interested in this area of work and have html and website design experience. Some administrative work is also part of the internship.

The internship is intensive and has a training period of 2 weeks. It offers a good opportunity for individuals who are interested in international education to learn about the field and to take responsibility for challenging projects. Interns at EAS work as part of a small, dynamic team in a productive and rewarding environment, dealing with people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Interns are supervised by, and report to the Educational Advisors. All temporary and permanent staff members are responsible to the EAS Director.

Nearly any major is suitable for this internship provided the individual has a strong interest in international education and knowledge of the U.S. educational system.

Skills/Experience

Applicants must be mature, well-spoken, and good at writing. Ability to work independently is a must. Some knowledge of the British education system would be helpful.

IE3 Program Fee

The program fee* for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

*The program fee noted above reflects the anticipated fee increase that will go into effect for the Fall 2010 term and will apply to all terms thereafter.

Compensation

Minimum of 3 months. Interns who can commit to 6 months will receive a stipend. Interns who work for 3 months will receive tube fare and lunch money.

Additional Expense Information

Interns must obtain a BUNAC Internship in Britain authorization ($750) and a tier 5 UK visa ( £125). The total processing time for these documents is about eight weeks.
