Francis Bacon is a bilingual, bicultural school of 500 students (preschool through sixth grade) with class sizes no greater than 25 students; interns will have assist with the English dual-immersion programs. Francis Bacon is not a traditional school, but focuses on real-world expereinces and incorporates many field trips throughout the curriculum. The school is located in the lovely and historic city of Guadalajara, Mexico. This internship is ideal for the budget-minded student, as free homestays are provided with school host families, and the cost of living in Mexico is very affordable. Students are counted as members of staff, and help to teach English courses and music classes; they may also substitute teach.

About the Organization

Francis Bacon School is a private bilingual and bicultural school of about 430 students (pre-school and elementary school). The pre-school level is total immersion in English. The curriculum of first through sixth grades is bilingual and bicultural. The mission of Francis Bacon School is to help boys and girls become responsible, respectable and autonomous individuals able to contribute to society through the sciences, the arts and moral values. A bicultural education allows them to be competitive in a global community. It is a non-religious school. Through professional, innovative and ethical educational services, FBS focuses on developing conscientious and competent students capable of impacting society in a positive and humanistic manner.

Academic Background

Open to most undergraduate/graduate majors. Education, ESL majors preferred. Open to science, music, physical education, computer science, English or spanish majors.

Skills/Experience

Must speak English as a native speaker. Experience working with children ages 3 to 13. Some knowledge and/or experience in teaching ESL recommended. Classroom management skills or ability necessary.

Speak English as a native English speaker. Some knowledge and/or experience in teaching ESL.Study of English grammar prior to internship is recommended.

Other Requirements

Interns must be enthusiastic, and team players. Experience working with groups of children in or out of the classroom. Classroom management skills or ability recommended. IE3 Program Fee

For spring term 2012, the program fee for the first term of any internship is $2950 - $3150. The expected program fee beginning summer term 2012 is $3450 for the first term. You do not pay tuition in addition to the program fee. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

Additional Expense Information

The Teaching Internships in Mexico receive priority consideration for the IE3 Scholarship.

Free room and board provided with a homestay family arranged by the school. $900 is suggested for 12 weeks for incidentals, personal expenses, local transportation, occasional meals out, and a modest amount of local recreation and some travel. Students who plan to go out frequently in the evenings or travel extensively on weekends, should budget additional funds for these activities.

This is a dual language and cultural immersion program with opportunities to participate in everyday Mexican life and culture. Dress code is conservative and includes a navy skirt or slacks (women) or navy pants (men) and a school issued polo shirt or blouse. No tattoos or body piercings (unless covered).
