The Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan puts emphasis on the intellectual and personal development of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Consequently, the Center offers an internship program in order to allow students to engage in its activities.

Students and graduates, both Jordanian and foreign, are encouraged to apply to work on one of these areas:

• Politics and security in the Middle East.

• Democratization, civil society, and public opinion in the Middle East.

• Economic development and social change in the Middle East.

• Iranian domestic politics and foreign policy.

About the Organization

The Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) was established in 1984 as an academic unit of the University of Jordan concerned mainly with research in the fields of regional conflicts, international relations and security. With the initiation of the country's democratization process in 1989, the center expanded its scope of activities to include planning and research in such new fields as democracy, political pluralism, the economy and the environment. Over the past few years, the CSS has organized numerous conferences, seminars and workshops, and has conducted several opinion polls aimed at providing researchers and decision-makers with valuable material and data.

Job Description

Interns will act as researchers/administrative assistants, and their responsibilities will include the following:

• To act as a research assistant to the faculty of the Center

• To assist in the preparation of newsletters and reports

• To assist in research projects at the Center

Interns will interact with researchers and help conduct research projects. Interns will acquire basic research skills, writing skills, editing skills, and time management skills.

Academic Background

Undergraduate or graduate student with a background in political science, public policy, economics, social justice, conflict resolution, international relations or international development would benefit from this experience. Additionally, students from all majors are encouraged to apply their skills and knowledge to the research efforts of CSS.

Skills/Experience

Required: Ability to work independently, complete readings and write reports. Intern must be task-based and have basic computer competency.

Preferred: Experience developing research proposals and writing funding proposals.

Language Ability

Must be fluent in English. No amount of Arabic is required, but the more fluency in Arabic an intern has, the more that intern will learn during the internship.

IE3 Program Fee

The IE3 program fee is $3450 for the first term for both in-state and out-of-state students and $1000 for each additional term, regardless of credit earned. You do not pay tuition for the term(s) you are abroad. Visit your University's IE3 page for details, costs for additional terms, and campus administrative fees.

The internships are unpaid, but a number of benefits are offered:

• Interns will be provided with office space and IT facilities.

• A certificate will be provided to all students on the successful completion of the internship.

• Interns will be allowed to attend Center events free of charge.

• The names of interns will be listed on the Center's homepage.

• Interns will be offered a certificate acknowledging their contribution.
