Internship Description

About the Organization:
The Foundation's purpose is to improve the health conditions of domestic animals on the Cook Islands by providing, on a continuing basis, a veterinarian and technicians for the Islands.  Foundation programs include: 
1.  Establishing and equipping a non-profit veterinary clinic. 
2.  Providing spay/neuter and immunization services. 
3.  Introducing a comprehensive animal health education program.

EHF Animal Clinic offers affordable spay/neuter services, full service veterinary care and a comprehensive humane education program.

Job Description:

The vet tech assists the veterinarian with animal treatment procedures, including surgical preparation, monitoring anesthesia, cleaning and sterilizing instrument packs. The vet tech also accompanies and assists the doctor during visits to island villages and the  outer islands.   The vet tech may at times be responsible for reception duties including answering phone, scheduling appointments, record keeping, book keeping and writing and sending monthly clinic  reports to the US office. Assists in maintenance and cleaning of the clinic area, surgery suite and kennel area.   Assists in EHF education program promoting animal care/health education.  EHF has a weekly newspaper column, a monthly radio show, a school visitation program, and dog obedience classes as forums for promoting animal care/health education.

Intern Qualifications

Academic Background:
Veterinary Medicine, Education, Environmental Studies, and related majors.

Skills/Experience:

Experience in animal care is important, but not required.

Language Requirement:

NONE

Other Requirements:

Intern should be enthusiastic, energetic and committed to improving the lives of animals. Vegetarians are preferred, but all applicants will be considered. Smoking is not permitted at the clinic or on clinic grounds. Cultural sensitivity required.

Internship Costs

Program Fees:
The program fee includes tuition, internship site development and placement, pre-departure orientation, international health insurance, internship monitoring and follow-up.

Accommodation:

Provided by employer.  The doctor and technician share equally in household and cooking responsibilities.
