Job Description:
Interns will assist with four different elements of the

mentor training and administrative shadowing. Interns will work with NZ
students in Year 10 (14-15 year olds). Following is a brief explanation
of each area of responsibility:
*Wilderness Adventure (19 days): New Zealand's wilderness
provides the backdrop for NZ students to learn goal setting, teamwork,
perseverance, self-reliance and self-knowledge. The adventure starts
with 10 days at a camp in preparation for a 10-day journey that can
involve kayaking, abseiling, tramping, mountain biking and camping.
Interns will function as trip leaders for this component.
*Community Challenge (30 days): During the community
stage, NZ students adapt the lessons learned in the wilderness to their
community and are challenged to explore the resources, opportunities
and support available in their local areas. They are encouraged to pursue stronger links with their community by
meeting with local figures and visiting organisations such as the council,
emergency services and marae. NZ Students also undertake a project to give something back to the community.
And towards the end of this stage, NZ students set academic, health
and fitness and personal goals to achieve within 12 months. Interns
will facilitate this process by working with their NZ students in their
respective community organizations 2 days/ week.
*Mentor Training (beginning immediately after Community
Challenge program is completed): Interns will participate in 20 hour
mentor training program and work with Project K to implement mentor
program for their NZ students.
*Administrative Duties: Interns will shadow different
administrative staff and assist with various projects based on intern
skills and experiences as well as site needs and projects. Administrative
duties will take place during community challenge and mentor training
periods.
