Internship Description
About the Organization:
The
Kokkola school district has several schools where interns may be placed:
The English Kindergarten teaches ages 4-7, Hollihaka School covers elementary
and middle school education for 7-12 year olds and Lansipuisto School, an
upper comprehensive school for 13-16 year olds. Most local schools operate
in a trilingual Finnish/Swedish/English environment and offer English language
immersion programs. Intern may also request to teach older students at the
Polytechnic School (Business, Nursing, vocational training).

Job Description:
Interns will work primarily in a language oriented
upper comprehensive school. Students are age 13-16 and have been in an
English language immersion program since elementary school. The intern's
assignment may include assisting and teaching in any of the following
subjects: cooking, art, technical and textile, sports, geography, biology,
and math. Additionally, the intern will assist in English lessons and
helping teachers develop appropriate lessons and seek out materials. Interns
will study local procedures and language learning techniques and will
later be responsible for teaching complete themes, possibly related to
their native culture. Previous interns have organized and lead English
conversation clubs in addition to their teaching load.

Start Date:
Kokkola's
fall term begins in August and ends in December. Spring term begins in January
and concludes at the end of May. Internship start/end dates are flexible
within this academic calendar, but applicants must plan to teach a minimum
of 10 weeks.

Kokkola
is looking particularly for an intern to work with 13-16 year olds. Candidates
should be in the final stages of their studies and have a special interest
in language learning.
Language Requirement:
Native
English speaker. No Finnish is required.
Other Requirements:
Open-mind
and interest in working in a variety of areas of art.
Internship Costs
Program Fees:
The program fee includes tuition, internship site development
and placement, pre-departure orientation, international health insurance, internship monitoring and follow-up.

Any financial or in-kind support provided by the host organization
is explicitly indicated.
Compensation:
Free
homestay and free lunches at the school. One time contribution toward international
travel expense (approximately $720).
Accommodation:
Homestay
arranged by the school district at no cost to the intern.
International Travel:
Estimate:
$ 1,400. City of Kokkola and parent association provides 600 Euros (approximately
$720).
Cost of Living:
Approx.
$ 500 a month, not covered by employer.
Budget Note:
Applicants should use these estimates for preliminary budgeting
purposes.
IE3 will issue an official budget after acceptance by the
host organization.
