Internship Description

About the Organization:
The Fulbright Commission administers educational exchange programs through agreement with the Government of Ecuador. The purpose is to increase mutual understanding between peoples of the U.S. and other countries through educational and cultural exchanges. In addition to exchanges, Fulbright /Ecuador does educational advising, testing and offers an English Teaching Program.

Local Activities:

The English Teaching Program assists young professionals to acquire English proficiency needed for their work or to pursue graduate studies in the U.S.. Courses emphasise grammar and writing, as well as reading and listening.  Classes in conversation and test preparation are also offered.  Furthermore, workshops and seminars are given to local English teachers. Courses are offered in four cycles per year with approximately 10 days between cycles. (See Section Below for more details)



Job Description:

 Teach three classes a day (usually 7-9am, 7-9pm, and an afternoon class, 3-5pm or 7-9pm), up to 24 student contact hours per week, Monday-Thursday.  Fridays are used for preparation of lesson plans, special projects, and administration of Placement Exams. New teachers may find the amount of work overwhelming during their first cycle and should assume a 40 hr. work week including class time, prep. time, correcting and student assessments. Interns are supervised by the English Program Academic Coordinator, including observation and structured feedback.

Start Date:

January, March, June, October.  Instructors are expected to arrive at least one week before starting a cycle. Each cycle runs 2.5 months.

Intern Qualifications

Academic Background:
TESL, Bilingual Education, Education, English

Skills/Experience:

At least some prior ESL teaching experience

Language Requirement:

None required and Spanish classes are offered to instructors depending on scheduling.  However, it is preferred that interns have Spanish equivalent to at least 2nd year university level in order to facilitate everyday living and social activities.

Program Fees:
The program fee includes tuition, internship site development and placement, pre-departure orientation, international health insurance, internship monitoring and follow-up.

Compensation:

Monthly stipend of approximately $800 provided by employer, assuming a 12-month assignment. Full time teachers also receive a local insurance package and a supermarket discount card.

Accommodation:

Rent for shared housing runs $100-$200 per month, homestays $16 per day

International Travel:

Approximately $1100.

Cost of Living:

$800 stipend covers normal local out-of-pocket living expenses, plus some local travel. 

Budget Note:

Applicants should use these estimates for preliminary budgeting purposes.
IE3 will issue an official budget after acceptance by the host organization.
