Internship Description

About the Organization:
The Chilean American Chamber of Commerce is an independent, non-profit organization representing, promoting & developing US business in Chile & fostering trade and investment between both countries. Founded in 1918, AmCham has some 700 member companies, and represents 18% of the private GDP in Chile and over 85% of US investments in Chile. AMCHAM provides members with benefits & services including networking, lobbying, commercial info, source for contacts, organizations of trade missions & seminars, monthly publication, invitations, & access. AmCham is an influential voice in the business community.

Local Activities:

AmCham Chile is located in the capital city of Sangiago in the upper class neighborhood of Las Condes. There are about 8 million people living in Santiago. It is a modern, urban environment with ease of transportation via the metro and buses. There are many activities in the area from museums and nightlife to shopping and extreme sports.

Job Description:

Interns will work within the Research Department in a variety of tasks including:
-Researching specific questions that members and other companies have about import/export procedures, regulations and commercial contacts;
-Carrying out larger research projects related to the U.S.- Chile Free Trade Agreement;
-Helping to maintain the Chile-US Free Trade Agreement website
-Attending committee meetings (some 10 a month) dealing with a wide range of topics and issues concerning business in Chile; and
-Other special projects based on the interests and knowledge of the intern.

Interns will be supervised by the Director of the Research Department who will also want to take advantage of special interests and knowledge that interns might bring related to the Research Department's work. The intern will agree upon a work plan with the Director and performance will be reviewed periodically.

Intern Qualifications

Academic Background:
International business, Economics or related field with economics coursework.

Skills/Experience:

Interest/knowledge of Chilean or Latin American economies; internet and other research skills; analytical skills, computer skills (excel, word).

Language Requirement:

Spanish coursework or practical speaking/writing ability equivalent to 4th-year university level.

Other Requirements:

Good interpersonal and customer service skills.

Internship Costs

Program Fees:
The program fee includes tuition, internship site development and placement, pre-departure orientation, international health insurance, internship monitoring and follow-up.

Note:

Any financial or in-kind support provided by the host organization is explicitly indicated.

Compensation:

Small allowance for work-day lunches and local transportation of 60,000 pesos monthly (approximate $85-90 USD  per month, depending on exchange rate).

Accommodation:

None provided but interns will receive assistance in locating suitable housing.  There are options to live with a homestay family, rent a room in a home or apartment or to rent a furnished apartment. Generally, rents run from about $190-$350 per month depending on the option, locale, etc. There is a one-time fee charged by a local agency to arrange housing and to assist with any housing issues that arise during your stay. The cost is $98 for interns staying for one term and $140 for two terms.

International Travel:

Approximately $1500. Interns also need $100 for multiple entry tourist visa upon arrival at airport.

Cost of Living:

Approximately $500-$700 per month for rent, food, incidentals and recreation, depending on your spending habits.

Budget Note:

Applicants should use these estimates for preliminary budgeting purposes.
IE3 will issue an official budget after acceptance by the host organization.
