Internship Description

About the Organization:
The International Ocean Institute Operational Centre for Australia and the Western Pacific (www.orda.com.au) is located in Townsville, Queensland Australia and is based at the James Cook University, Douglas Campus. Established in April 2002, IOI (Australia) enhances links between Australia and its developing country neighbors in Oceania and the Western Pacific. It also provides an interface between science and the social sciences on issues relating to the sustainable use of coastal and ocean resources. The IOI promotes education, training and research to enhance the peaceful uses of ocean space and its resources, its management and regulation as well as the protection and conservation of the marine environment.
The IOI was established in 1972 (www.ioinst.org), with its headquarters based in Malta. The IOI network comprises a total of 26 Operational Centres, working in partnership with a range of host educational and research institutions, mostly in developing countries.

Training: The IOI network offers a variety of training programmes featuring short courses; they are coordinated under the IOI’s training programme IOI-OceanLearn. OceanLearn is coordinated by IOI (Australia).

Research and Policy Development: IOI (Australia) works on projects focusing on biodiversity conservation and ocean and coastal management, coral reef monitoring and invasive species surveys. Links are maintained between Australian institutions, funding agencies and developing country partners in the Western Pacific (Pacific Islands, Indonesia & Thailand). IOI (Australia) is unable to support research involving SCUBA diving or extensive field work. Most successful interns have been policy oriented or involve consolidating research outcomes and literature reviews from across the IOI’s global network.

Consulting partnership: IOI (Australia) works with Oceania Research & Development Associates, Inc. registered in Apia, Samoa (www.orda.com.au) on projects such as the Global International Waters Assessment and biodiversity projects in South East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
