- Session 1: Dimensions of A Meaningful Internship Experience
It’s not just the intern that plays a role in the successful outcome of an international internship. Advising and selection, orientation, effective learning guidelines and helpful supervision abroad all play a role. A panel of presenters will discuss the critical issues for all involved and their role in making an internship successful.
- Session 2: International Internships 101: Working with IE3
This workshop format presentation will cover the critical aspects of international internships and how to make them go smoothly. Issues discussed will include visas, cultural preparation, language preparation, internship issues, pre-departure orientation, selection, support while abroad, health and safety, internships vs. service learning, internship standards, pitfalls to watch for and an introduction of the IE3 program and how it works together with campuses, students and sites.
- Session 3: Preparing Students for an International Career - at Home or Abroad
What makes a graduate competitive in a global workforce? How do you find an international job? What path leads to an international career? A panel discusses these points and others. Panelists include an international internship alumna, a recruiter from Adidas, and a career services advisor.

1:45 – 3:15 Focus Sessions
Session 1: Strategies for Integrating International Experiences Into The Curriculum How do you build international program into curriculum? Strategies for working with faculty and international programs to make a long-lasting partnership where the students win.
- Session 2: Re-entry: Helping Interns Integrate the Experience into the Rest of Their Lives How can we as faculty and advisors help returnees make the most of their experience? What are they going through when they return and what strategies exist to help them incorporate what they have seen and learned into their future? This session will focus on ways to recognize and effectively address re-entry shock, helping students answer, “What do I want to do with my life?” and then assisting students to leverage their experiences into a professional context.
- Session 3: Creative Funding Strategies for International Internships
An international internship may be an invaluable contribution to a student’s education, but how can they pay for it? This workshop session will focus on existing models for financial support and feature a brainstorming session for even more creative ideas.
3:30-5 Focus Sessions
- Session 1: Maximizing Study Abroad/International Experiences
Workshop on maximizing outcomes of international experiences based on the groundbreaking work at the University of Minnesota under the direction of R. Michael Page. The workshop will include tools to help prepare students for international experiences and an interactive session to work on ideas for your campus.
- Session 2: Pre-med Internships: Issues, Values, and Outcomes
Nowhere do value and lifestyle differences hit as hard as in a healthcare related internships. Interns who set off to gain experience with another country’s healthcare system face logistical and emotional challenges very different from other types of internships. What can we do to prepare and support them during this pivotal experience? What are the outcomes and benefits for students seeking a career in medicine? A panel will address the issues and outcomes in a pre-med internship abroad.
- Session 3: Academic Aspects of an International Internship – Faculty and practicum coordinators will address issues of academic credit for international internships, including academic reporting requirements for internships, fitting international internships into an existing internship paradigm, and working with students when they return to help them incorporate the experience into their further coursework and research.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16
9:00-12:00 Orientation Issues for International Internships
This session will lead participants through a mock orientation for an international internship. Using the materials developed by IE3 Global internships to help interns succeed abroad, participants will get a glimpse into the orientation process, with a chance for feedback and debriefing about the importance of orientation.
12-1:30 Lunch and feedback session on orientation. Lunch is provided for participants in the Saturday session.
1:30-4:30 IE3 Campus Advisor Annual General Business Meeting (for Campus Advisors or their proxies only)
