Khloe Frank
Peer Mentor
Internship Site: Child Family Health International (CFHI) Bolivia: Pediatric Health, Bolivia | Home Campus: University of Washington
Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
My name is Khloe, and I am a 3rd year undergraduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle. I am majoring in biology and minoring in global health. For spring quarter 2012, I did an IE3 global internship in Bolivia with an organization called Child Family Health International (CFHI), focusing on pediatric healthcare in La Paz and then rural health in Tarija. My research focus for university credit was studying how socioeconomic inequalities affect societal health and well-being.I enjoyed this internship so much, and the experience really helped me grow as a student, a professional, and a person. One huge highlight for me was getting career insight and first-hand experience in the fields of medical and public health. Interviewing patients at Hospital del Nino helped me realize my passion for pediatrics, and I will never forget seeing a C-section for the first time in the operating room of Hospital Obrero. Another memorable aspect of my internship was expanding my world view by being immersed in another culture – trying new foods, learning different customs, and becoming adept enough with Spanish language to communicate with my host families, internship mentors, patients, and Bolivian medical students. I developed many professional relationships that will be useful in my continued work in the field of global health, and I am still in contact with the friends I made abroad as well. Finally, I appreciate how the unique nature of the internship-abroad experience helped me expand my sense of independence – I now feel more comfortable with things like traveling by myself and taking initiative for my own learning and work experiences.
I am very excited to continue my involvement with the IE3 Global Internship program as a Peer Mentor this year, and I look forward to guiding other students as they search for the internship opportunities that are right for them. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about IE3 Global Internships!

Lauren Martin
Peer Mentor
Internship Site: Individual Placement, Dublin, Ireland | Home Campus: University of Washington
Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Hello! My name is Lauren and I am one of the new IE3 peer mentors for the UW campus. I spent the summer in Dublin, Ireland on an individualized placement internship. I worked at an immigration and human rights law firm, helping them out with research and administrative tasks, and I learned a lot about Irish culture, EU law, and refugees. It was an incredible, life-changing experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.I am a senior at UW and my major is Law, Societies and Justice with a minor in International Studies. I hope to complete both college and departmental honors. In addition to working for IE3, I am employed at the Law, Societies, and Justice, Political Science, and International Studies writing center. I am a mentor for the UW Dream Project, which is a program that helps underrepresented high school students apply for college. For fun I love reading, writing, photography, talking on the phone, watching movies, and dreaming of my next trip abroad.

Sarah Flagherty
Peer Mentor
Internship Site: The Catholic University of Lyon International Relations and Institute of Languages and Culture, Lyon, France | Home Campus: Portland State University
Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I was immersed in Quaker values through my career-long Friends school education. I was always the “but why?” child, and have turned into the grown up version—having an insatiable curiosity about the world and a strong desire to travel.
I have recently returned from two years of study and internship in Lyon, France. I have always been interested in the French language and culture ever since I precociously identified with Cosette in “les Miserables” as a young girl. But it wasn’t until my experience in France and Europe that I decided to pursue a career path in International Relations. My experiences in France have heightened my perceptions about American culture and how Americans see themselves in relation to the rest of the world (international affairs).
Throughout my internship my adaptability was tested as I was constantly forced to change my opinions and perspectives in order to acclimate to the French society. Although the internship and study abroad programs were at times extremely challenging, I developed a broad range of skill sets that I am already putting to use in Portland. In addition to my position at the IE3 office, I work part time at the Portland French Alliance and part time as a French nanny for two students at the Portland French American International School. In my spare time I enjoy working on my bike, photography, and cooking. -
Victoria Leca
Peer Mentor
Internship Site: ITESM Campus Queretaro, International Education Department, Mexico | Home Campus: Portland State University
Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
My name is Victoria Leca and I am senior double majoring in Political Science and International Studies. I have a passion for diplomacy and throughout my studies I have discovered that international education is an integral part of a peaceful, diplomatic relationship between two countries. This made me decide to intern in Mexico in the International Programs office at Intituto Tecnologico de Monterrey, campus Queretaro, where I assisted the international students with any question related to their immigration requirements or how they can integrate into the Mexican culture. Before going to Mexico I worked in the International Affairs office at PSU, which prepared me for this internship and I was also able to finish Spanish 303, which helped me improve my language skills. Now, after a successful internship, I am back at PSU finishing my last year and helping domestic students who are thinking of doing an internship abroad. I think that study-abroad internships are a great way for students to get international professional experience while also getting academic credit.
