This is the first phrase I heard once I got off the plane in Queretaro, Mexico and this will be how my first month here will feel – like a welcome celebration where people are happy that you chose to try to learn their culture and their lifestyles. I have never met more hospitable and friendly people than my host family (together with all their relatives that I met at some point but that I can’t always keep track of) and my coworkers.

It has been just over three weeks since I returned to the States and not a day has gone by that I do not miss my family, friends, work and lifestyle in Argentina. I am constantly reminded of my three year old host-sister and how we would spend hours after dinner each night playing “hijos y casa”; of the two elderly women whom I have come to call my abuelas; the long conversations discussing political theory and foreign policy I would have with my host-father each night at dinner as we watched 678 Buenas Noticias; and the daily late-night shenanigans and Sunday brunches I had with my coworkers and friends.

I have been here now for 5 1/2 months. It has been an amazing experience. One of my first posts was about the stark difference I noticed between the rich and the poor in Senegal. Going back and reading that post, I honestly did not do a good job painting the picture of poverty in Senegal. So, let’s just say this, just seeing the lives of the poor here has changed my perspective on a lot of things in life and the western world leads it.

It was then that my eyes were truly opened to the culture I was in in Zanzibar. I realized that women could not really do as they wanted, that men were the only ones that could run around, play, and express themselves in other ways than just through clothing. I was able to sit back and truly look at the life I had in Zanzibar, and be so thankful that I got to experience that life.

My friends have all been wonderful in my transition back to the United States, but there is something within me that has changed that I cannot lay a finger on. It is like trying to explain the tune to a song that you love to dance to, but you cannot describe thoroughly in the right words why you are compelled to sway to it.

Yesterday, as I helped paint the faces of the the kids of barrio San Cayetano and of the jardín infantil in preparation for the 8th annual march, I felt proud that I was able to assist in planning and organizing the march and also grateful that the timing worked out that I be present for such a special day. The kids danced the murga and played the drums throughout the closed downtown streets of Villa Constitución, eventually coming together in the Plaza to sing, role-play, and talk about how far the children of Engranajes have come.

Like many other interns who have made that long journey home from a foreign country, leaving behind co-workers, friends, and a home, as it were, I was at first at a loss for words to articulate the significance of my experience. It's been several months now since I returned from my internship site in Cape Town, South Africa and the stage of adjusting to the surreal novelty of changing Rand back to Dollars and driving on the righthand side of the road again have long past. Only now has the significance of the journey has finally started to sink in.

Coming home to Ellensburg I have realized just how much we have lost in our fast paced lifestyles. I have been home almost a month and today during biological anthropology my professor asked how the class was. I realized that this was the first day someone has asked me how I am. This has been the hardest adjustment in coming home. I think the cost of our fast paced society is that we have lost a sense of community and that realization has been the saddest part of coming home.
