Victoria Leca: Portland State University (PSU) student interning in the International Education Department of the ITESM Campus in Queretero, Mexico.
Originally from Romania, I am now double majoring in Political Science and International Relations at Portland State University. I am very interested in diplomatic relations between the United States and other nations around the world. Cultural and educational exchanges are great ways of fostering understanding between two countries and I am lucky enough to see this happening every day. I work in the Office of International Affairs and my job as a student assistant made me realize that I would love to promote cultural understanding between citizens of different nations. Now I will go to Mexico and have the opportunity to do just that by working in the Education Abroad department at ITESM in Queretaro, where I will facilitate educational exchanges. It will be a great experience and I am very glad to be able to take part in an abroad internship!
Jennifer Lund: Oregon State University (OSU) student interning with Child Family Health International (CFHI) in South Africa.
I am currently a senior at Oregon State University studying Public Health with an option in Health Promotion and Health Behavior and a minor in Sociology. I am very excited to be completing an IE3 internship in South Africa this winter. I will spend five weeks in Durban working in a variety of health care facilities observing the impact that HIV/AIDS has had on the health care system. I will also spend five weeks in Cape Town rotating through the wards at two major hospitals where I will experience the healthcare challenges South Africans are currently facing. I am very excited and eager to learn about the health care system of a foreign country, particularly that of South Africa where they have such great demand for services. I am very interested in sexual and reproductive health and hope to have a career working in this area one day. I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity because I know that I will be given invaluable first-hand experience that will only better my future. Thank you!
Adaora Nkwonta: University of Oregon (UofO) student interning with Child Family Health International (CFHI) in India.
I am currently a fifth year student at the University of Oregon, majoring in Human Physiology with a minor in Ethnic Studies. Through the IE3 Internship, I will be visiting two different locations. The first location will be in Dehra Dun, where I will learn about the traditional and indigenous systems of medicine in India. The second location will be in Pune, where I will experience antenatal care, intranatal care and postnatal care facilities and will learn about newborn care, immunization schedules and pediatric care. As an intern, I am extremely excited to learn about the importance of cross-cultural competency in the combination of modern and traditional treatments. I am also very excited to be exposed to and learn more about the healthcare system in India that caters to the needs of women and children, as my future career goal in life is to be a pediatrician.
