Announcing Summer 2010 IE3 Scholarship Recipients

We had large pool of outstanding Summer 2010 term applicants for the IE3 Scholarship; however, the following five students stood out amongst their peers. The IE3 Scholarship is awarded to interns with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence. In fulfillment of this award, scholarship recipients must document their experience with both a written and visual submission. We look forward to sharing with you updates of their successes. Ann OluloroAnn Oluloro, University of Oregon: Child Family Health International, Bolivia
Ann Oluloro is currently a junior at the University of Oregon. She is double majoring (Biochemistry and Biology) and completing a minor (Business Administration). When she first entered college, she made a list of ten or so things that she wanted to accomplish before she graduated. One item on her list was to study abroad. Fortunately, not only will she be studying abroad summer 2010, but she will also be completing an internship. Her country of choice is Bolivia. By going to Bolivia, she will be able to take Spanish classes and will be able to improve her Spanish conversational skills. Secondly, she will be able to complete a medical internship. The medical internship will take place in both La Paz and Tarija. Her main job will be observational but she may be able to engage in some medical procedures. In La Paz, rotations will focus heavily on pediatrics while in Tarija it will focus on chagas, an infectious disease. By completing this internship, she hopes to gain a deeper understanding of international medicine and to examine how public health systems are implemented in poverty-stricken areas. She also would like to get a sense of how she can influence the global healthcare scene as a doctor one day.

Stella ChiuStella Chiu, University of Oregon: Child Family Health International, South Africa
Stella Chiu's CFHI internship in South Africa will consist of 5 weeks in Durban and 5 weeks in Cape Town. In Durban, she will be focusing on the HIV/AIDS epidemic by educating and supporting the community. This will include doing house visits for patients who are too sick to go to the clinic, visits orphanages, and observing the hospice system. Stella hopes to learn about the numerous medications available for HIV treatment, educate students in the area about health issues, and gain a better understanding about the correlation between the social economic conditions and health care. In Cape Town, more focus will be given to clinical rotations in various hospitals and clinics to understand and observe the prevalent diseases specific to underdeveloped countries.

Aaron La SalleAaron La Salle, University of Montana: Adidas World Headquarters, Germany
Aaron La Salle is currently a junior at the University of Montana studying International Business and Marketing. He was originally born in Belgium to American parents and moved to the U.S. at the age of thirteen. Coming from overseas he acquired several languages including; French, Dutch and English. He loves to play sports, mainly soccer, and travel! His internship is located at Adidas World Headquarters in Germany where he will be aiding with the daily operations of the company. His goal is to learn how things work in a foreign business operation/environment and to be able to put to use his newly acquired skills and knowledge in pursuit of a career in international business.

Laura McMahonLaura McMahon, Oregon State University: Sea Turtle 911, China
Laura McMahon is a junior who transferred to OSU from a small community college in California. She is majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife Science. During her internship, she will be working with the non-profit organization, Sea Turtles 911. This internship will allow her the opportunity to work hands-on in endangered species conservation and in turtle rehabilitation.

Nick Smith, University of Oregon: Center for Strategic Studies, Jordan
Nick Smith's IE3 internship will be an extension of his study abroad program he is currently participating in Amman, Jordan. He will be interning with the Center for Strategic Studies, a research branch of the University of Jordan. With the Center for Strategic Studies he hopes to expand his knowledge of the Middle East and its political intricacies while building upon his previous research skills. With CSS he will have the opportunity to research the current status of Palestinians in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. He will also expound his foundational research skills that will help him in formulating a senior thesis for the department of International Studies at the University of Oregon.
