Kathryn Lattman, Oregon State University: Catholic University of Lyon International Relations, France.
I am a current Junior at Oregon State University majoring in French Language and Literature. I have been living in Lyon, France, since the end of August 2009. I came to France through the Oregon University System to study abroad in Lyon for one academic year, and I completely fell in love with the city! I found an eight-month-long internship available at the Catholic University of Lyon for the year 2010-2011 though IE3, and the internship position is exactly what I would like to do as a career. As an intern I will be supporting international students who come to Lyon to study abroad, advising them as well as planning events to help them become acquainted with the city. I will also do translation work and mediation between the departments of the Catholic University and other organizations. I am extremely excited for this internship; I hope to work as a director of a study abroad program someday, either in France or in the United States. This internship will give me first-hand experience for my future career, plus it will allow me to experience different cultures as I will be helping international students who come to Lyon from all over the world.
Rachel Rustad, Portland State University: Grassroots Community Development, India
I just finished my first year of graduate school in Conflict Resolution at Portland State University and am dedicated to working towards positive peace. In the field of conflict resolution, positive peace works towards preventing violence, oppression, and war by working to create social, economic, and racial justice. In other words, if there is inequality in the world, we will continue to have conflict manifested in the form of fighting and competition for resources between and within individuals and groups so we must address the root causes. This is why positive peace-building is so important to ending war and violence. I am going to India to learn more about how to do this as in support of both Chaitanya and Prerana who are local grassroots organizations doing amazing work for justice and peace. I am particularly interested in empowering women and girls as we are a marginalized and oppressed group the globe over in order to address the issues which uniquely affect our lives, such as preventing gendered, domestic, and interpersonal sexual violence, as well as to promote social, political and economic empowerment- reasons for why I want to do this internship. I believe that through the work of Chaitanya and women's self-help groups and micro-credit opportunities, I can learn how to help impoverished women in my community and in the United States as well to become self-sufficient and empowered. Women and girls all over the world need these tools. Additionally, Prerana's work in Mumbai will help strengthen my knowledge and skills in working with health issues such as HIV prevention and community outreach, as well as in supporting the needs of both the children of sex workers and sex workers themselves. I strongly believe in an empowerment-based approach which I learned from my work as an advocate for survivors of domestic and sexual violence at Portland Women's Crisis Line which is that each of us has a great strength within us and we know best how to stay safe and what choices are best for us. As I work alongside women in urban and rural areas of India, I will continue to be informed by the empowerment and anti-oppression model as I have just as much or more to learn from the work of Chaitanya and Prerana as I have to contribute. I am deeply committed to humbly learning and actively supporting the work I will do in my India internship, and am so excited and honored for this amazing opportunity to continue to build frameworks for peace and justice in our interdependent and interconnected world. Thank you so much!

Micheal Pacheco, Portland State University: Shure University, Japan
I am very excited to be participating in a six month internship at Shure University here in the fast paced, neon fueled city of Tokyo. In my interview with the president of Shure University, we discussed my involvement in everything from PR to music to film to theater to teaching English - anything I want to get involved with is ok! As a musician and artist, and with experience at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and as a previous small business owner, this is a very exciting experience for me where it looks as though I will get a chance to be creative in my daily work life. Not only will I use my current skills and talents to benefit the students of Shure University, I will also be learning skills and developing new talents that will be a benefit to my own future as well. I would like to thank everyone on the IE3 team and at Shure University for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a great program!
