Scholarship Recipients Abroad Winter Term 2009

Noted on January 16, 2009 by Natanya in

Times are tough, but scholarships can help make a dream come true. Meet three of the interns who are abroad this term on scholarships offered through IE3. They'll be posting regularly with updates from their internships.

Margaret (Maggie) Davis, University of Oregon, Casa de los Angeles in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Winter 2009 I was raised in Eugene, Oregon and received all of my education from kindergarten to college within a a one-mile radius. I have an appreciation for my community and have worked in public schools and with volunteer organizations as a tutor, coach, interpreter and docent. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and International Studies and am writing a thesis for the Clark Honors College dealing with the effects of the U.S. financial crisis upon migration in Mexico. When not caught up with all this I enjoy petting my cat, eating hamburgers and playing pool. I also love spending time with my brother and sister and getting together with friends. I will be working as an intern at the Casa de los Angeles in San Miguel de Allende. This organization provides childcare to working mothers in the area. Through my work there I hope to help with fundraising efforts and to create community awareness and support for the organization in addition to having a great time with playing with all the kids.

Ryan Mayock, UW, CFHI Medical Rotation Internship in Delhi and Mumbai, Winter 2009 A premed philosophy major, I intend to enter the field of international medicine and development. Believing cultural competence is at the heart of good medicine, I seek out new international settings and situations. I hope to attend medical school starting next year in order to ensure that my future clinics will always have a doctor on site. During my time in India, I will learn about the challenges of HIV in an urban setting, studying public health in Delhi. Also, I will have a job shadow in infectious disease. I believe both will prove invaluable to me in my later work.

Brian Moore, Oregon State University, Table Mountain Marine Team, Cape Town, South Africa, Winter 2009 I will be traveling to Cape Town, South Africa winter term of 2009. Once on the ground I will be assisting the Table Mountain Marine Team, a part of the South African Park Service. The main goal of the Marine Team is Fisheries enforcement work in the reserve - this involves doing inspections, patrolling for poachers, and checking permits in this very popularly used area. I hope to accomplish many things in South Africa. I have never been abroad before, not even to Canada or Mexico, so I am very excited to change that, I truly hope that this trip will change my perspective on the big and scary world out there. I would like to walk away from this experiences feeling like I am somehow South African and understand the struggles of other people. Aside from the personal changes, I hope to also develop myself professionally. I know that this internship will give me great skills for a future career. I also don’t know what I want to do when I grow up aside from working with nature, so I hope that this internship will help to steer my direction. Over all this will be one of the best experiences in my life.
