IE3 Alum founds Awadeshalo Project

Noted on December 15, 2008 by Christopher Bennett in

IE3 Alum Jenny Gerfen from Western Washington University, who interned with Adoption Advocates International in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2007 has founded the Awadeshalo Project, dedicated to enhancing the lives of Ethiopian street children through love, compassion and education while embracing enviornmentally and culturally sustainable practices.

During her internship in Ethiopia, Jenny witnessed the severe challenges and dangers faced daily by Ethiopian street children and was alarmed by the lack of a social safety net to support them. With the support of her Ethiopian friend Thomas, Jenny has founded Awadeshalo (which means love in the Ethiopian language of Amharic) to build an organization dedicated to providing this critical support for street children.

Her plan is to locate the project in the city of Bahir Dar in northern Ethiopia at the source of the Blue Nile. Understaning the importance of providing culturally-appropriate support, Jenny intends first to return to Ethiopia in September 2009 to gather information by volunteering at various agencies in the region and interviewing stakeholders.

Visit the Awadeshalo Project's website at http://awadeshaloproject.weebly.com to learn more and fund out how to support Jenny and the Project.

The preferred route does not pass through any conservation reserves or protected forest areas although there are known bird migratory routes and important bird areas adjacent to the Bahir Dar to Gonder section.

The grants took him to the Bahamas, where he worked as a research assistant for zoology professor Mark Hixon and even performed his own study on the effects of Bahamian marine reserves on fish communities. “What’s great about Robbie is that he is so enthusiastic, so willing to work and so dedicated to learning about ocean conservation and management,” says Hixon.

In September, Lamb will use the grant to help build a marine reserve in the country’s Esmeraldas region mdash; with fishermen’s input. “I’m very ready to go work with them,” Lamb says. “A big part of developing sustainable fisheries there will be establishing my own relationships with fishermen.”
