Gilman Scholarship deadline approaching...
Winter/Spring 2009 Application Deadline – October 13, 2008
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is currently accepting applications for the Winter/Spring 2009 cycle of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, this program enables students who have limited financial means the opportunity to participate in undergraduate study abroad programs worldwide. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all US citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:
The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad.
The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's institution of higher education in the US
The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country.
The applicant is studying abroad in any nation worldwide with the exception of Cuba or any nation currently under a US Department of State issued Travel Warning
The applicant is participating in a Winter and/or Spring 2009 study abroad program. Summer-only study abroad programs are excluded as the Gilman Scholarship does not have a summer award cycle nor are awards made for summer-only study abroad.
The goal of the Gilman Scholarship is to diversify study abroad participation as well as the countries and regions where students go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad including, but not limited to, students with high financial need; students from diverse ethnic backgrounds; students going to non-traditional countries (especially outside of Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada); students attending community colleges; students in underrepresented fields of study (e.g., sciences, education); students of non-traditional age and students with disabilities.
Applicants selected as award recipients will receive up to $5000. Additional awards called Supplemental Language Training Grants, of up to $3000, may be made to students studying target languages.
There are MANY awards made, and the Gilman folks will probably disburse hundreds of thousands of dollars, in this cycle, to U.S. Americans from many universities and colleges. In some cycles, as many as 1 in 3 applicants receive a Gilman Scholarship of some amount.
Students apply via an online application that can be accessed on the Gilman website (http://www.iie.org//programs/gilman/index.html). The student online application deadline for the Winter/Spring 2009 cycle will be October 13, 2008.
Note that you will need to know the name and contact information for two people:
(1) the Program Coordinator who works with the specific country/program in which you plan to study, and (2) the Financial Aid Officer
