After an applicant has submitted a complete application, he or she must
have an interview on campus. The interview by an objective campus representative
is the final recommendation necessary for the placement process to proceed.
Without the recommendation of the home campus, the application will not
be submitted to the host organization.
Critical issues to address and observe include:
Maturity
and motivations for doing the internship
Nature
and depth of previous professional experience
Likelihood
to succeed in a cross-cultural work environment
Anxieties
or concerns about the placement
How
the internship fits with the applicant's career goals
Dates
that the student IS and is NOT available to start an internship (eg. alternate
terms, family events that require a late start, etc.)
Financial
considerations of the internship and student's planning
Credit
plans
Graduation
plans (eg. will the student be returning to campus?)
The interview report can be an email summary of the key points. These
interview reports are internal documents only and will not be forwarded
to internship sites. There is no need to repeat information that is covered
in the application materials, unless you have additional information (eg.
explanation of a low GPA or other "red flags").
Key points to include in the email are:
Applicant's
name, campus and class standing at time of internship (eg. junior, senior,
post-bacc, Master's)
First
choice internship position
Anticipated
term(s) of internship
Strengths
Deficits
Red
flags or concerns
Graduation
plans
How
highly you recommend the student
If you have questions about the requirements of a specific internship,
contact the regional director before the interview to discuss the criteria
necessary for a successful placement.
